Theory Tests are changing in April 2020
The way that the theory test works in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is changing this April. The changes are designed to make the theory test more accessible to people with reading difficulties, learning disabilities and developmental conditions.
The April 14 changes will apply to car theory tests initially, but there are plans to roll out the changes to other types of theory test in the future. In this blog post, we’re explaining how the theory test is actually changing and why it will be better for all people taking the test going forward.
How the Theory Test Is Actually Changing
In the current theory test, people taking the test read a case study. After they have read the case study, they have to answer 5 questions about it. However, this is all changing going forward. Instead on reading a case study, from April 14 you will watch a video clip and answer 3 questions about it.
This video will test your knowledge and understanding of the road rules, in the same way that the old case study segment of the test did.
How This Video Works
The new video will be a short, silent clip. You will get the opportunity to watch the clip, after which you will be presented with 3 multiple-choice questions.
Before answering the questions, you will be able to watch the video as many times as you want. You can the questions and then watch the video again, if required. This will allow you to check that you have answered the multiple-choice questions correctly.
What Will the Video Be?
There will be a range of videos, all showing situations such as a car driving on a country road. These will be common situations that any driver could find themselves in. Once you have watched the video, you will answer the questions.
The questions will be related to the video that you have seen. Gov.UK gives the following question examples:
- Why are motorcyclists considered vulnerable road users?
- Why should the driver, on the side of the road, look out for motorcyclists at junctions?
- In this clip, who can cross the chevrons to overtake other vehicles, when it is safe to do so?
Although the above questions are just examples, the questions will all follow a similar format. The questions will all have four possible answers. You will have to select the correct answer from the options available to you.
Who the Changes Impact?
These changes will impact all car theory tests that take place on April 14 and beyond.
Will There Be Any Other Changes?
The addition of a video rather than a case study is the only change to be aware of at the moment. Remember, this change will only impact car theory test currently.
The rest of the test will still contain 50 multiple-choice questions that need to be answered within 57 minutes. You will still have to get 43 of those 50 questions correct to pass the multiple-choice questions part of the test.
The hazard perception element of the car theory test isn’t changing either. This will still be the same as previously, where you watch videos and have to click as hazards develop. If you would like any more information about the changes, we are happy to advise you. Please contact Zeb Driving School today and explain that you would like to discuss the theory test changes.
